Project Background & Concept

I write and perform original music under the moniker The Bigness. Over our 10-year tenure in Philadelphia, The Bigness recorded three albums and performed on stages of every size throughout the northeast corridor.

In 2018, the band went into the studio to create an EP titled What We Make. For the album art, I sought to bring together a community of artists. To create a unique artifact that was flexible enough to promote the music on a variety of digital platforms as well as printed media. I provided lyrics, early mixes, and a color palette to six artists. Each artist created visual interpretations of a different song.

Uniting Custom Illustrations into a Cohesive Design

With these works in tow, I designed the lyric book, including the type treatment on the cover. The 8x8 zines included links for streaming and digital download of the album.

Illustrations by: Sarah Messina, Rev Gausman, Robb Leef, Jon Weed, Estelle Barrett, and Roderick MacNeill.

A limited edition CD included a scaled-down zine insert. The cover design translated seamlessly to shirts.

What We Make is a reflection on what we all, individually and collectively, create—the art we make, what we make of our lives, and what we make of our world. We’re honored and humbled by all the makers who were part of the process.
